Guitarist Ryoji Yamaguchi is active as a performer, arranger and composer in fields such as Classical, Pop/Rock, Ethnic, and other styles of music. He was born in Tel Aviv, Israel to Japanese parents in 1981. Since childhood, he has lived in other countries such as Greece, Mexico, Japan, El Salvador and the United States. At the age of five, he started violin lessons with Yuriko Kuronuma in Mexico. After returning to Japan, he began studying violin with Kanae Shiba. At the age of 16, he switched to the guitar while residing in El Salvador.
From the year 2000 to 2004, he attended the University of Miami for bachelor’s degree in Classical guitar, where he studied with Dr. Rene Gonzalez. During Yamaguchi’s studies at the University, he had performed in masterclasses of guitarists such as Sergio and Odair Assad, Thomas Kirchhoff, Stephen Aron, Eduardo Fernandez, Ricardo Gallen, Manuel Barrueco, Hopkinson Smith, Jason Vieaux, and others.
Yamaguchi’s current and past groups/projects include; fusion Andean group Inca Spirit, rock bands Caña, deafcayxxx, and Mess Anger, an instrumental trio Ensemble Otodama, and Sephardic Folk singer Susana Behar’s group. Yamaguchi has also worked with accomplished musicians from variety of fields such as; Hajime Nishi (Shamisen player), Harmonic Motion (dance and music group), Junko Ohtsu (violinist), and Earl “Chinna” Smith (former guitarist of Bob Marley and the Wailers).
In January of 2007, Yamaguchi’s instrumental group Ensemble Otodama, which consists of Brian Potts on percussion and Joe Rehmer on double bass, was featured in Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, among Kenny Rogers, Michael Bolton, Monty Alexander, ABBA, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Ryoji Yamaguchi and his groups appeared in various music festivals, magazines, radio, and television programs.
In February of 2004, he won the second prize at the first Miami International Guitar Competition. Pop/Rock group Caña also won a prize at a competition held by Hard Rock Café Miami in the same year. The group released their first album “On the Rocks” in the following year. Yamaguchi’s instrumental trio Ensemble Otodama will release their first CD “In Autumn” sometime in 2008. Ryoji Yamaguchi has completed Master of Music degree from the University of Miami Frost School of Music in May 2007. Currently, he performs and teaches in Miami. He is on the faculty of SoBe Music Institute in Miami Beach, Florida.

１９８１年イスラエル生まれ。５歳からヴァイオリンを黒沼ユリ子、柴香苗各氏に学び、１６歳でギターに転向。２００４年米国フロリダ州マイアミ大学クラシックギター科卒業。在学中レネ・ゴンザレス氏に師事。また作曲をロバート・ガワー、フレッド・デセナ両氏、ジャズ・ギターをキンチ・オーケイン氏に師事。マスタークラスをオダイル・アサド、セルジオ・アサド、エドゥアルド・フェルナンデス、リカルド・ガレン、マヌエル・バルエコ、ジェイソン・ヴィオー、ホプキンソン・スミス各氏に学ぶ。２００４年第一回マイアミ国際ギターコンクール準優勝。同年ビミニ島にヴァイオリニストのシャ・ザンと供に招かれ共演。様々な分野で活躍しており、アンデス音楽グループのインカ・スピリット、津軽三味線奏者の西はじめ、レゲエ・ミュージシャンであるボブ・マーリーの元専属ギタリスト、アール・チナ・スミス、セファルディ民謡歌手スザナ・ベハール、ロック・グループのカーニャやＭｅｓｓ Ａｎｇｅｒ、自身が作曲を担当するジャズ、クラシック、ブラジルや日本音楽の要素をを取り入れたクロスオーバーグループのアンサンブル・オトダマなどと共演やレコーディングを行う。２００４年には所属していたロック・グループ、カーニャとハードロック・カフェ・マイアミ主催のコンクールで優勝、マイアミ代表としてアメリカ全国選へ進出。2006年１２月、ジャマイカで公演とレコーディングを行う。2007年1月にはアンサンブル・オトダマとジャマイカのモンテゴ・ベイで開催されたエアー・ジャマイカ・ジャズ・アンド・ブルース・フェスティバルにＡＢＢＡやＥａｒｔｈ，Ｗｉｎｄ ＆ Ｆｉｒｅなどと共に招待される。２００７年にフロリダ州のマイアミ大学付属フロスト音楽院ギター科より卒業。同年４月そして２００８年にはヴァイオリニストの大津純子女史と米国フロリダ州で共演。幼い頃より、ギリシャ、メキシコ、エル・サルバドル、アメリカ合衆国などの国々に生活し、そこで得た音の経験は、クラシック・ギター以外にもロック、民族音楽、作曲その他の幅広い分野での活動で生かされている。現在米国フロリダ州を拠点に演奏活動を行う他、ＳｏＢｅ音楽院でギター講師を務める。
